    How does a constant-speed propeller actually work?

    A constant-speed propeller changes its blade angle so the engine holds the RPM you selected. When the propeller tries to speed up, the governor increases blade angle to take a bigger bite of air and load the engine back down; when it slows, the governor reduces blade angle. You set an RPM; the propeller does the work of keeping it.

    What is the DC SFRA, and why is it different from ordinary airspace?

    The Washington, DC Special Flight Rules Area is a defined volume of airspace around the capital with additional rules layered on top of normal airspace rules, and a smaller, far more restrictive Flight Restricted Zone at its centre. Flying there involves special awareness training, specific communication and transponder requirements, and current official information — and non-compliance is treated seriously.

    Why do fast airplanes have swept wings?

    Sweeping a wing means the airflow component that matters aerodynamically — the part perpendicular to the leading edge — is smaller than the airplane's actual speed through the air. The wing therefore behaves as though it were flying more slowly, and compressibility effects are delayed to a higher aircraft Mach number. The price is paid in low-speed behaviour.

How these are made

Each briefing follows one structure: the question, the fifteen-second answer, why it matters, an original step-by-step visual, the mental model, how it shows up in the cockpit, the common mistake, a three-question check, and the exact primary sources with the date a human last read them. Diagrams are hand-authored SVG in our own codebase — nothing is traced, copied or adapted from anyone else’s work.

Briefings are free to read. Some future briefings may be part of a membership, but no subscription exists, nothing is for sale here, and nothing on this page is behind a paywall.
